Elinore Pruitt was born in White Bead Hill in the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory (now south-central Oklahoma) on June 3, 1876.

Up to that point, poverty, hardship, deprivation, and insecurity characterized her life. She was born 3 June 1876, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, to Elizabeth Courtney Pruitt. Her father died when Elinore was young and her mother married Thomas Isaac Pruitt, Elinore's uncle. Elinore's for-mal schooling was brief. Elinore Pruitt, a widow and mother who washed clothes for a living in Denver, planned to work as a housekeeper for some rancher while learning all she would need to know about homesteading a place for herself.
